It's Dangerous to Go Alone by zorn981 It's Dangerous to Go Alone by zorn981
This is my rendition of the famous and often satirized scene from the The Legend of Zelda NES where you get your sword. I did this piece because I feel like though it is satirized all over the internet that this moment in the game is far more serious, perhaps even somber. It is my interpretation of the scene that the old man is a hero/warrior of days gone by but now seeing young Link on his journey unarmed and naive, he offers Link his sword, the last piece to tie him to his once grand past, in essence passing the torch to Link. My thoughts at least :/ But it is this mood that I sought to capture in the old man's weary eyes and Link's mouth agape, taken aback by the gravity of the moment.

This piece is a deviation not only in the obvious subject matter but also in style, I felt that making this one "paintier" than my last works which leaned more toward realism, somehow endowed this piece with a more regal presence, one I felt appropriate for the piece and my interpretation of it.

Thanks for reading, thanks for viewing and thanks to my watchers for sticking with me!!

Wow, this is beyond gorgeous. I especially love the fire and the burning logs. I think I've seen real fires that looked less real than that! Anyways, the atmosphere of this painting is terrific, very dark, very grave. The light from the fire is like a beacon of hope in that dark and dreary cave, just like Link will become to Hyrule.

I sorta wish I could see Link's face from the front. I bet he looks adorable with his mouth hanging open.

If that's the Master Sword, then couldn't the old man and old woman be ALttP (or ALBW- I heard it's later on the timeline, gold era?) Link and Zelda? :)

Reminds me of my favorite fan-idea I've ever heard. Not sure where I first heard it, but someone mentioned how great it would be to have a Zelda game that starts after you seal away Ganon. Zelda orders you to return all the sacred items you collected, so you spend much of the game going to temples and LOSING items instead of gaining them. As you go, you also grow older, and the Master Sword starts to lose power. By the end of the game, the difficulty is immense because you have only three hearts, no side-items, and only a weak metal sword. After you defeat the boss, you are very old, Ganon has returned, and you have to make your way to a cave. You enter it, and find the sword has become wooden. Then, a young boy in green shows up, and Link finally says his first and last words; "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this."

I am so glad you painted this; I have been waiting for something like this. Haha I'd actually imagined my own rendition of this eight-bit scene in my head before.... but goodness I think I might like yours better. :D

I love the depth and space you've added to the cave, and the fire there for the old man.... kind of makes you wonder how he lives in there, what his life is like.... is this one of the last safe shelters in the world of monsters conjured by Ganon?

And I love your take on the old man. We really don't know anything about him, but I like your thoughts on what his past might have been, and the weight of the precious gift he's handing over to Link---who looks fabulous there with the slight hesitance in his mouth, that soft kind of shock.... augh, it's just beautiful.

I love this. I love it all.

This is beautiful. I love the realism you put into it--definitely makes it feel more somber, more serious as it was meant to be. Just like you described. The colors are wonderful, and I especially love how you did the fire. It looks so real! The cave area in the background gives the piece nice depth too.

Not much else to say but wonderful job! :+fav:

Thank you to everyone who commented on my piece, it means alot to me! But I wanted to inform everyone that it looks like my second version of this piece did not upload correctly before my computer got hit by lightning, but the second version is of the old man holding the wooden sword (game correct) and will be uploaded as soon as I can pull the files off my old hard drive so be on the lookout! :)
